GALPAO APLAUSO

Galpao Aplauso develops art and culture projects and activities for at-risk youth living in favelas in Rio de Janeiro. Breaking the perception that cultural spaces built in favelas would only harden, the methodology used by Galpão Aplauso combines dance, theatre, music, circus and plastic arts with social concepts, principles and values such as ethics, civic duty, respect, environmental education, solidarity, health and honesty.

Through these activities, Galpão Aplauso helps youth move from being disaffected social beneficiaries to active members of society accepted by the labor market.

Closely working with the MIF since 2009, Galpão Aplauso has been able to increase its visibility, strengthen its management and expand to new productive areas. Additionally, through the provision of staff training and aid in curriculum design, the MIF has helped Galpão Aplauso increase its ability to prepare youth for jobs in in-demand industries (such as energy, naval and civil construction, and supermarket management value chains) once they leave the program.

Moreover, the knowledge obtained through this partnership has, and continues to be, invaluable for the MIF. The methodology at Galpão Aplauso is worthy of scaling up and replicating elsewhere, and the MIF hopes to be able to use it as a tool for social inclusion among youth in the region.

Through its partnership with Galpão Aplauso, the MIF aims to fulfill its commitment of improving the lives of the people of Latin America and the Caribbean through the provision of access to markets and capabilities.
